Garmin Graphic Route Editing

All of the handheld Garmin mapping receivers that I am familiar with offer a feature which allows you to edit the route directly on the map.  This example uses the feature to edit an existing route to add intermediate waypoints.  It is possible to create a route from start to using the map.  When you initially press ENTER to place a new point in the route,  on some of the Garmin units you will get the create waypoint screen and must move the cursor back over the new waypoint after you create it to add it to the route.  This is just one extra quick step.

Garmin Legend C, Vista C, probably 60C and 76C:

Select MAP from the route page.  When you press ENTER at a cursor point and there is no map data, the GPS will prompt you as to whether you want to create a waypoint at this point.  Select "yes".  When you get to the waypoint creation menu, do not select any of the buttons at the bottom ("DELETE, MAP, or GO TO").  Press the QUIT key to get back to the map that you are creating the route with (upper right side key on the Legend and Vista).  Now move the cursor over the new point and press ENTER to add it to the route.

Although I don't consider it quite as elegant as the Garmin design, Lowrance offers a method of adding waypoints directly to the route using the map.

It is somewhat possible to use the map to create a route graphically with Magellan receivers.  You must create a dummy route.  When you move the cursor to a waypoint and create a new waypoint, it is possible to add it to a route directly.  You can add each new waypoint to the dummy route and later erase the first two dummy waypoints.
